Many parents are choosing organic baby clothes over conventional clothing. Organic trends have moved from the supermarket shelves to the clothing shops, as organic cotton is being used more and more. If you have not yet jumped onto the organic bandwagon, you may be wondering why organic baby clothes are so important.

Conventional cotton farming practices involve a lot of chemicals. Pesticides are needed to keep bugs at bay, so the farmers can get the largest crop possible. There are also regular treatments of herbicides to prevent weeds from growing in the fields. All of these chemicals seep into the cotton plants, into the cotton, and into the soil. There, they stay in the cotton that becomes your clothes, as join the ground water that flows into nearby lakes and rivers.

Despite our cultural image of cotton as white, it’s not really pure white. Clothing manufacturers use bleach to strip the cotton of any color, often setting the white color with additional chemicals such as formaldehyde. For an example, a single cotton onesie needs one third of a pound chemicals to make.

Organic clothing is much different. Organic farmers use no chemicals to help them grow their crops. Pesticides and herbicides are not a part of organic farming, which means less chemicals in the cotton and in the ground. That makes organic farming safer for you and the environment.

For clothing to be certified organic, it needs more than just organic farming practices. Clothing manufacturers also have to avoid using chemicals in the processing of the clothing. This is why most organic cotton is a light brown colour. There is no bleach or formaldehyde being used to strip the cotton of color. As a result, there is no lingering bleach or formaldehyde on your skin.

Babies have the most sensitive skin, and they can be more easily effected by chemicals in their environment. When parents choose organic baby clothes, they do so to limit their infant’s exposure to the dangerous chemicals that conventional clothing has. Choosing organic also means there will be fewer chemicals in the ground and water, helping your baby grow into a cleaner earth.
