Over 4.9 Million Graco Strollers Recalled Due To Amputation Risk

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC), Mexico’sConsumer Protection Federal Agency (PROFECO), Health Canada and Graco Children’s Products Inc. have issued a recall for Graco strollers and travel systems. 202,000 to be exact. 

This recall involves eight models of Graco strollers & travel systems. All affected models are a single-occupant stroller with a spring-loaded fold lock on each side and a one-hand fold release mechanism on the handle.  Model numbers and the date of manufacture are printed on a label located on the stroller tubing frame.

The recall was issued as the folding hinge on the sides of the stroller can pinch a child’s finger, posing a laceration or amputation hazard.

Fold lock side viewLARGEIn the United States, Graco has received 11 reports of finger injuries including six reports of fingertip amputation, four reports of partial-fingertip amputation and one finger laceration.

Neither Health Canada nor Elfe Juvenile Products has received any reports of consumer incidents or injuries in Canada related to the use of the affected products.

Approximately 202,066 of these strollers & travel systems were sold in Canada, 4.7 million of these strollers & travel systems were sold in the United States and 10,000 of these strollers & travel systems were sold in Mexico.

Time period sold:

In Canada, the affected strollers and travel systems were sold from August 2000 to November 2014.

In the United States, strollers and travels systems with a manufacture date from August 1, 2001 to September 25, 2014 are included in the recall.

Contact Graco immediately for a free repair kit. Repair kits will be available from the firm at the beginning of December 2014. While waiting for a repair kit, caregivers should exercise extreme care when unfolding the stroller to be certain that the hinges are firmly locked before placing a child in the stroller. Caregivers are advised to immediately remove the child from a stroller that begins to fold to keep their fingers from the side hinge area.
