Wye Marsh ~ The Perfect Family Day Trip In Midland, Ontario

Wye Marsh with Kids

The kids are out of school, which means many of us are busy travelling or planning day trips and other fun activities to keep everyone busy for the next couple of months. I like to take our children on trips that will both educate and entertain. The Wye Marsh Wildlife Center in Midland is ideal for kids of all ages and is located on 3,000 acres of wetlands, fern and forest near Georgian Bay.

IMG_3402 IMG_3400As soon as you enter the building, you’ll notice the indoor displays. Here you can learn all about the wetlands and the variety of plant and wildlife located in this ecosystem. Snakes, frogs and other creatures can be found inside these displays and there is plenty of information that explains the how/what/where and whens of their habitats.

Once we had taken a tour of the inside, it was time for our outdoor adventure to begin! Did you know that 70% of Canada’s wetlands have disappeared due to environmental stressors such as invasive species, upstream runoff and land developement? Wye Marsh is home to over fourteen species at risk and is protected by the government for visitors and the education of future generations. We saw Trumpeter Swans (you can see them all year round here) and spotted a few babies too!

There are activities for kids throughout the marsh, including nets in a special area where they can hunt and fish for water creatures.

The observation tower provides incredible views of the wetlands and woodlands, so bring your binoculars and camera!

We took a canoe ride through the marsh which was memorable to say the least! We saw a few bull frogs, fish and a beaver during our tour as we glided along surrounded by lily pads. The kids got a nice arm workout too ;).

There are lots of birds and owls on property and one of the guides was kind enough to let us touch them.

IMG_3434Wye Marsh has so much to offer and you could easily spend the entire day here. Pack a lunch, or enjoy a bite at the on-site cafe.  The centre is open year-round, however we have yet to visit during a snow fall. Yet another reason for us to visit again!

Disclosure: We were provided with complimentary media passes. All thoughts and opinions are my own!
