The Guncles Create Hotel Inspired Bedroom For Their Daughter Simone

Simones Room 9

I’ve seen plenty of children’s rooms and nursery decor in my time, but nothing has appealed to me as much as Bill Horn and Scout Masterson’s recent overhaul of their daughter’s room. Also known as the “Guncles” on the hit reality show Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood and frequent guests on such other shows as Giuliana & Bill, Tia & Tamera, Blinging Up Baby and Rachel vs. Guy, Bill and Scout have an awesome eye for decor and their room is inspired by one of my favourite things – hotel rooms.

“When Simone was born, we did the nursery in a rush. We had about 5 weeks between the time we officially ‘matched’ with her birth mom and the time she was born, and because adoption costs can get expensive, we had to do the room on a very limited budget. So this time, we knew we wanted to go BIG.”

“Ever since Simone graduated into a ‘big girl bed’, we’ve discussed wanting to re-do her room. It was important to us that she had a say in the design process – and she requested a light pink room.”

You’ll usually find the Masterson-Horn family at the Beverly Hills Hotel on weekends as it’s their favourite spot in Los Angeles! It was during one of their weekend lunches that the inspiration for this new bedroom came into play. They used the pale pink of the hotel’s exterior, and the green and white stripe of the majestic entrance, with gold accents and banana leaf fabric that mirrors the hotel’s famous wallpapered hallways. In the photos, Simone is rocking Beverly Hills Hotel monogrammed PJs her dads bought for her at the hotel gift store.

“We created an inspiration board with pictures from the hotel, items we’d found online, and materials we’d collected from the hotel like a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign. We even took paint samples and consulted the hotel’s gift store staff.  We have no shame. Ha!”

Another thing I love? They created this room on a budget using repurposed items that they already had and shopping at flea markets and vintage shops for the rest.  The side table was a $10 find at a local antique flea market near their house. The dresser was also a flea market find – it was $80 at the Long Beach Flea Market. The pink phone was a Santa Barbara thrift store find (it was $7) and isn’t plugged in.

“At night, we call the front desk and them to hold all calls while Simone sleeps. She eats it up!”

The wooden bed was found at a flea market for $60 and they painted it glossy white. The twin mattress is from Nook, and Scout found the jadeite lamp on Simone’s side table on Etsy! It was broken, came in pieces and had to be professionally fixed and rewired, so they took it to a lamp repair shop for fixing. The antique brass lamp on the dresser was also an Etsy find.

Items on the dresser include photos of Simone with her grandmothers, a photo of Simone and her BFF (Harper), a Jonathan Adler elephant piggy bank, an antique jewelry box, and matching Jeanette shell pink milk glass vase and jewelry tray from the 50’s (found on Ebay).

The Bow Petite pillow on Simone’s chair was a gift from designer Mari Robeson.

Simones Room 5Simone’s favorite books sit on Land of Nod shelves. They include The Giving Tree, A Tale of Two Daddies, Surfer Chick, My First Wonder Woman Book, and her godmother (Tori Spelling’s) book, Presenting Tallulah.

“We like books with strong female protagonists and families that resemble ours.”

We are so excited to showcase this room to our readers and a big thanks to Bill and Scout for sharing their design inspiration with us! You can keep up with their family on gunclesonline.com.

My five year old just stopped in her tracks when she saw the photos of Simone’s room – and then promptly said that’s how she wants her next room to look. We both love it!
