Valentine’s Day Food Idea ~ How To Make Heart Shaped Ravioli

Heart Ravioli

What could be cuter or more thoughtful than a warm bowlful of heart-shaped pasta for a Valentine’s Day lunch? Sure there’s heart shaped sandwiches or other cookie cutter lunch creations, but homemade ravioli says “I love you” in an extra special way. True these take a bit more effort than your average lunch endeavor, but you can also make these ravioli ahead of time and cook them straight from the freezer!

If you’ve never made homemade pasta before, let me tell you, you’re missing out. For a long time, I never considered making my own homemade pasta. It seemed so difficult and time consuming. Then I came across this tutorial for making your own fresh pasta on Annie’s Eats and discovered it’s really not that hard!

While fresh pasta makes a killer bowl of spaghetti, I really love filled pastas. These ravioli are my family’s absolute favorite. I hope you enjoy them too!

Heart Ravioli

Valentine’s Day Ravioli

  • 1 batch of fresh pasta

  • ½ cup ricotta cheese (whole or part-skim is fine)

  • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese

  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • 1 tsp. Italian seasoning

  • salt & pepper to taste

  1. Roll out pasta to desired thinness (I rolls mine out to about a 4-5 setting on my pasta roller). Cut out heart shapes with a 2 inch cookie cutter. Rework scraps if desired.

  2. Combine cheeses and seasonings in a medium bowl. Scoop 1-2 teaspoons of cheese filling onto the middle of half the heart shaped cut-outs. Spread filling into a heart shape, leaving a small rim around the edges.

  3. Brush remaining pasta hearts lightly with water and press over tops of filled hearts to adhere. If you plan on freezing before cooking, place ravioli on a large parchment-lined baking sheet and flash freeze for 1 hour before transferring to a Ziploc freezer bag.

  4. When ready to cook, boil a pot of water seasoned with salt. Gently boil 5-7 minutes for fresh ravioli, or 7-9 minutes for frozen ravioli. Top with your favorite sauce and enjoy!
