Yoga For Kids: Everything You Need To Get Them Started

yogaforkids

It’s no secret that I’m passionate about health and fitness, for both myself and my family. Various forms of yoga have been a part of my life since I was a baby. There is nothing quite like yoga. It’s rejuvenating for the mind, body and soul! These days my preferred styles are both Vinyasa and Ashtanga.

Over the years I’ve collected a few yoga mats and there are always 4 stored in our family room. Over the last couple of weeks, they’ve all been in use! My eldest daughter recently voiced an interest in practicing with me and so I started to look into various yoga programs and DVDs. If you have Apple TV and a Macbook you can stream YouTube and Vimeo videos onto your television screen, so naturally YouTube was the first place I hit and immediately struck gold.

Cosmic Kids Yoga is an Australian based show geared just for kids and is quite unique as it weaves in storytelling with yoga poses. My kids LOVE this program and best of all – it’s completely free! Each session is between 15 and 20 minutes and all three of my children (2, 5 and 7) have been able to work through the entire lesson without becoming bored. Highly recommend this one!

If you’re looking for a little more variety, there are several DVD programs and yoga mats available just for kids!

Gaiam is the king of all things yoga. Their DVDs are great, they sell a vast array of gear and they never disappoint. The brand has their own DVD set called “Yoga For Kids” which includes “Yoga Basics”  and another – “Yoga Fun.”

My kids use my mats (as long as they don’t touch my new baby I’m happy (Harmony Professional from Jade Yoga) so they don’t have their own, but child sized mats are available if you want to get them their own kiddie sized. Amazon.com has great selection.

A leggings and t-shirt are your best bet when it comes to yoga clothes for kids, but if you’re kids are a little older or you’re looking for something a little more athletic, ivivva is our favourite go-to shop for girls’ fitness fashion. Psst… if you’re looking to save a bundle, hover over the “Shop” button and select “Now or Never” for discounted gear and apparel! You’re welcome ;).

My kids love yoga! My 8 year old son has been taking it in afterschool since September and it really helps to calm him. He now does it 2 days a week. My 6 year old daughter just started going to one of the days of afterschool and she loves it too. My 3 year old son wants in too!
