The Time I Fell In Love With A Potcake While Visiting Turks & Caicos Islands

When you travel there are so many amazing spots off the beaten path to discover that will amaze, inspire and educate you. During my visit to Turks & Caicos with my daughter, we visited Potcake Place. What is a potcake? A potcake is a mixed-breed dog that comes from the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos Islands. The name comes from the overcooked mixture of rice and peas that would crust at the bottom of a cooking pot, it’s the leftovers that Bahamians would feed the stray dogs, hence the name ‘potcake’.
Potcake Place
Potcake Place is a place in Turks & Caicos that takes care of these stray dogs and provides them with a home until they can be adopted by a loving family. I thought it would be a cute way to break up the day as my daughters loves dogs. What I didn’t expect was to fall in love with them myself. The best way to describe a potcake is a dog that has the Caribbean spirit. They are calm, friendly, warm and have a really gentle nature. They cuddle into you like little babies and show so much love. According to the owner, these dogs are very intelligent, loyal and calm.
We stayed longer than I had anticipated as we were just enamored by these sweet animals. I was “this” close to taking one home (they are given away to good homes for free) as I was informed that it would cost me an extra $100 in fees through the airline. Unfortunately my husband was adamant against it, so no dog this time, although I’m not sure I’ll be able to resist during our next visit.
Even if you don’t want to take a potcake home, it is encouraged that you play with these dogs or even take one out for the day. Next time you’re on the island visit Potcake Place and take one to the beach for the day, the kids will have a playmate and you’ll be giving these sweet pups a day out.

*Disclosure: Our visit to the Potcake Place was a part of our hosted trip through Turks & Caicos Tourism.*
