Sadie’s Ice Cream Parlor At The Grand Hotel ~ Our Review

The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan has a new addition! Last year they shared their plans to turn the flower shop into an old-fashioned ice cream parlour and after a busy fall and winter, they’ve done just that. Sadie’s Ice Cream Parlor is an adorable shop accessible to guests of the hotel as well as visitors to Mackinac Island.

The story behind Sadie’s is an interesting one. Mr. and Mrs. Musser, the hotel’s proprietors have a little dog who’s name is Sadie. She’s won numerous shoes including the 2010 Westminster Dog Show, and the Grand Hotel’s Card Room is dedicated to this little dog.

You’ll find photos, paintings, awards and framed newspaper clippings showcasing Sadie’s achievements inside the Grand Hotel. She’s a part of the family and part of the inspiration behind the ice cream parlor.

You can access the ice cream parlour from outside the East entrance of the building and there is wheelchair accessibility thanks to the beautiful little path that makes its way up to the front door. Even if you aren’t staying at the hotel, you can still visit this little parlour without any admission fee. Be sure to check out the video above for more of an interactive tour!

Traditional Michigan favorites, sweet treats and 24 flavors of Hudsonville Ice Cream (based in Michigan) are just some of the treats you can choose from. If you have a big appetite or want to order something memorable, try the special Grand Sundae, served in a dog bone shaped bowl. Think of it as the ‘kitchen sink’ of sundaes. Yes, it’s that big! My husband indulged in a regular sundae and our kids had some ice cream which they throughly enjoyed.

IMG_1301I on the other hand, tested out a miniature version of the hotel’s famous Pecan Ball. A small scoop of ice cream, rolled in pecans and served with a dish of fudge to dip into. Divine!

Sadie’s was decorated be Grand Hotel’s interior designer Carleton Varney and ties in aspects of a traditional American ice cream parlour with original decor pieces and accents and plenty of vintage memorabilia. The chandelier is my favourite – simply stunning!

The Grand Hotel is our favorite place to stay on the island, but even if you aren’t staying on property, you can still enjoy a treat at this fabulous ice cream parlour.
