I tried out several hotels during my numerous trips to Montreal last winter and one that stood out among all of the rest was the famed Hotel Nelligan in Old Montreal. Conde Nast’s 2011 Reader’s Choice Awards ranked Hotel Nelligan in 3rd place for Canada and 1st place in Montreal. It’s a luxurious, boutique choice for those looking for something other than the typical chain. Named in honour of 19th century Quebecois poet, Émile Nelligan, Hotel Nelligan is located in the heart of Old Montreal and was essentially an $8.5 million restoration project built into the existing area of two historic 19th century structures. Somehow they were able to preserve the original stone and brick walls. They both surprise and charm.
