Taking The Kids To Notre-Dame Basilica In Montreal, Quebec

Notre-Dame Cathedral, Montreal

Montreal, Quebec is a great place to visit as a family, but Old Montreal is by far my favorite place in the city. The cobblestone streets and gorgeous architecture will have you feeling as if you’ve stepped into Europe. It’s a completely different vibe as opposed to downtown Montreal. Once you’re  there, taking the kids to Notre-Dame Basilica is a must. It is my favourite place in the entire city and Montreal’s crown jewel.

Notre-Dame Basilica, Montreal

Notre-Dame Basilica is located on Notre-Dame Street on the corner of Saint Sulpice. It was built in 183- and stands 197 feet high. The interior design was inspired by Sainte-Chapelle in Paris and offers a gothic revival style with details that are extraordinary. Walking into the Basilica is both breathtaking and unforgettable. The beauty touches your soul in a way I’ve bever expereinced. I first laid eyes on the Basilica while watching the coverage of Celine Dion’s wedding to Rene Angelil. They were married here! After that day, I promised we would visit one day and I’ve been several times since.

There is a smaller chapel, the Chapel of Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur (Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) which is located directly behind the Basilica. When you walk in, you are surrounded by rich gold hues in the wood and inlays. This chapel is good for smaller events whether it be a marriage or funeral.

In addition to the religious services offered at the Notre-Dame Basilica, there are many special events that take place throughout the year. Concerts, choir concerts and their infamous sound and light show called “And Then There Was Light”. It is suited for children ages 7 and up and during the course fof the show you’ll experience work from over 150 artists and technicians move along screens, curtains and projectors. The last time we visited, this was booked up, but it’s definitely something we want to do in the future!
