St. John’s Antigua – Long Bay Beach & Cruise Port Of Call Review

St. John’s Antigua was one of our favourite stops during our Carnival Breeze cruise. As soon as our feet touched land we were greeted to musicians and friendly faces. There are a bunch of little shops located directly across from the pier. Here you will find vendors and taxi drivers approaching you from every direction. They are very persistent, more so than any of the other islands we had visited!
TIP: Bargaining will get you far and slice up to $15 off your cab fare, so take your time and shop around!

Before heading to the beach we decided to take a stroll through the streets which are old and quite worn. The candy coloured houses line the streets in just about every shade, so be sure to have your camera ready and charged. Instead of visiting one of the beaches closest to the port, we decided to take the short trek to Long Bay Beach. It took us approximately 35 minutes to reach this beach and the fare was $35 for our entire family (going rate was $45).

Long Bay Beach is located just next door to the Grand Pineapple Resort owned by Sandals. There is no fee for using the beach and chairs will run approximately $5 each. Everything about this stop was relaxing, from the powdery white sand to the crystal clear turquoise waters. It was quite hot, so the shady spots were welcome. My youngest daughter took a nap under one of the trees for just over an hour and it gave me peace of mind to know that she was cool and comfortable.

Snacks are available at a little hut just off the beach. Here you will find fast food options, fresh fish and the island’s local beer, Wadadli (it’s a must-try!). The kids and I gorged ourselves on fresh fruit that we purchased from a local vendor on the beach, while we watched the local artisan carve incredible figures and murals out of a tree. I ended up purchasing a little heart box for our girls which he engraved with his initials and the date of our vacation.
TIP: Although everyone is very nice and welcoming, don’t forget to bargain. They will overcharge you at the drop of a hat.

I highly recommend Long Bay Beach as a suitable day trip for families. The beach was ideal for tots and the overall atmosphere was fantastic.

Disclosure: Transportation and accommodations were provided by Carnival Cruise Line. They hosted my family and I on this cruise. All thoughts and opinions are my own as always.
