Downtown Disney Will Transform Into Disney Springs By 2016 (PHOTOS)

When it comes to family travel news, Walt Disney World Resort never disappoints. They always have something in the pipeline. Last week they announced a multi-year transformation of Downtown Disney which will be expanding, revamped and renamed Disney Springs. Open-air promenades, additional shopping, dining and entertainment will be available ala waterfront.

Tom Staggs, the chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is looking to feature world-class restaurants and unforgettable entertainment while bringing Disney Springs to life with the same focus on storytelling and attention to detail that is so apparent with their theme parks, resorts and cruise ships.

Between the boutique shops and unique flagship anchor stores, they say Disney Springs will offer a variety of shopping, dining and entertainment experiences and discover options that is unlike any other currently available in Central Florida. In comparison with Downtown Disney, Disney Springs will offer double the number of shops, restaurants and other venues for guests to explore, resulting in more than 150 establishments in four outdoor neighborhoods interconnected by a flowing spring and vibrant lakefront. In addition to a new gateway with a signature water tower and grand entry, the destination will feature:

  • The Town Center, offering a sophisticated mix of shopping and dining along with a promenade where guests can relax, refresh and reconnect.
  • A colorful commercial district called The Landing with inspired dining and beautiful waterfront views.
  • The family-friendly Marketplace will combine new experiences, such as an over-the-water pedestrian causeway, along with classic Disney favorites, including an expanded World of Disney store.
  • A West Side that provides an exuberant atmosphere with lively entertainment, along with a series of new elevated spaces that provide both shade and an overlook to the activity below.

Construction is slated to begin this month and is expected to complete in 2016. Squee!!

That is good news, Downtown Disney, while certainly enjoyable, has been a little directionless for a few years. It looks like the expansion / reimagining will make the area a nice relaxing place to spend a day.
