Have you ever gifted a toy to your child only to realize that you forgot the batteries? I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve done this. After realizing that the stores are closed, I usually scramble through my house and desk drawers to find batteries that are indeed dead. Why not just throw them out you ask? I don’t know… I just hate the idea.
Batteries are so terrible for the environment and I wince every time I throw one in the garbage. Apparently (unbeknownst to me) you can recycle batteries! Where have I been that I did not know this?!
Surely I can’t be the only one who was clueless to this. In fact, I have to be part of a majority because Stewardship Ontario has unveiled a new Ontario-based program and part of that program is a brand new mobile app. This app encourages Ontarians to find their nearest drop-off location and at the same time record the batteries they drop off for recycling.
Okay yes that’s cool, but what’s the point? For each battery that is recycled, Stewardship Ontario will donate 30 cents, up to a maximum of $15,000 for drop-offs made before November 4th. Their goal is for 50,000 batteries to be dropped off before this date. Pretty nifty huh? After visiting MakeTheDrop.ca, anyone can choose from either EcoSpark or Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre as the recipient of a donation.
According to a recent poll, nearly all (95 per cent) of Ontarians who currently throw batteries in the trash said they would be somewhat likely to change their ways if it was easier for them to recycle.
As you can see, they have in fact made it much easier to do so. To download the app and to find out where to make a drop, visit makethedrop.ca/mobile. But wait. We have a fun giveaway to mix it up a bit .
