A couple of months ago Disney Junior launched their first interactive episode for iPad, “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally Appisode,” as well as a new app for young kids, “Jake’s Never Land Pirate School,” available for iPhone, iPad and
iPod touch. To my daughters’ utter delight, we downloads both of the apps yesterday. We haven’t been downloading very many new ones as of late since every app they want comes at a price, so I was thrilled that these two apps are in fact – free!
We started off toying with the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Ralley Appisode and for some reason I was under the assumption that this was just a basic television episode, when in fact it is an interactive experience. The app is designed for ages 2-7 and they definitely got the age range down pat as both my 3 and 5-year-old daughters loved it. During the appisode, your kids can tap, touch, shake, swipe, drag and talk through the experience. They really engage the kids! I also liked how there was a learning aspect to the games – critical thinking, counting and problem solving.
The second app – Jake’s Never Land Pirate School, is my personal favorite. I was actually physically removed from my couch by my husband who received complaints from the girls that mama was hogging the iPad. The games are not cheesy in the least and grab your children’s attention for long periods of time. Challenges include Sailing, Pirate Band, Map and Spyglass as well as Pixie Dust classes. Yes, it’s fun.
You start off by registering your child as a male or female pirate. You also have the option to upload a picture of them so that they are a ‘real pirate’ playing along with the characters. Since we are slightly cheeky, we decided to use my son as the playing pirate.
I wish we would have had these apps installed for our last road trip! The kids would have had an absolute blast. As I write this they are still playing with the games. Unless you have two iPads, I do recommend purchasing a Universal Car Headrest Mount
so that they can share – otherwise you may be up for some arguments on who gets the game first.
Disney Junior WATCH makes full length episodes of its popular shows, which you can view online for free at www.watchdisneyjunior.com and via the Disney Junior WATCH app on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Comcast Xfinity subscribers have access to premiere content, including a live feed of the network online and through the app. After the live feed, current shows will be available “on demand”. Perfect if you’re in the middle of a show and need to run out to do errands! If your kids happen to miss their favourite show, they will have up to 10 days to catch up on WATCH. Fans who aren’t on Comcast can contact their cable provider to ask for the service via the website or the app.
