Did your baby’s name make the list? On May 15th, the U.S. Social Security Administration released the most popular baby names for 2012. Names such as Jacob, Mason and Isabella make the list yet again and have me wondering whether parents are choosing names based on movies like Twilight, or if authors are starting to pick names off the ‘Most Popular’ list.
Mason jumped 10 spots to become the second most popular name for baby boys last year, moving Michael out of the top five for the first time in 63 years according to the Associated Press. Come to think of it, I’ve always seen Michael in the top 5! Kind of strange now that it has moved.
Check out the top 10 for boys and girls:
BOYS
1. Jacob
2. Mason
3. William
4. Jayden
5. Noah
6. Michael
7. Ethan
8. Alexander

4. Olivia

10. Chloe
Well, not one of my three children made the list, which I’m kind of relieved about. My kids don’t have rare names by any means, but I’m glad that they are a little unique
. I’m really digging this list of the Top Baby Names Around The World. There are so many great choices here that aren’t so popular in the USA or Canada.
Did your child’s name make the list? If you are currently expecting are you considering naming your baby from the ‘Most Popular’ list? How did you choose your child’s name?

Like you, I am so happy when my kids’ names aren’t “popular”…though I am hearing more and more of my daughter’s name. The funny thing is that back in the 90s my aunt and uncle named their kids a bunch of names that became really popular a decade or two later and, in fact, all three of the girls’ names are on the list this year! We never thought we’d see Chloe up there…but there it is!
YIKES….
My Sophia is #1 – not good… I really did NOT mean for that to happen.
And Janice’s Olivia is #4
We picked those names b/c they rhyme with Julia whose name I’d picked out over a decade ago.
My almost 8 year old’s middle name is on there, which was almost her first name until I started hearing everyone and their dog being called that name while I was pregnant! But, it turns out her first name is one of the most hated names (that list was out about a month ago!) so I have really screwed that poor child over by giving her a hated first name and a super common middle name. I’ll just start a therapy fund for her now.
My boys’ names are usually around 65 or so, which is fine with me. The girls’ list is funny to me though; it’s like reading through the roster in my 3rd grader’s class. There are girls in his class with the names listed as 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.
I think it’s funny that Michael has been in the top for so long. I can’t think of a boy I’ve known under 15 named Michael. Maybe it’s more common in some large urban areas or something.

These names are all “popular” because they’re just plain old common names.
