Featured Review: My Own Story Time Pad By LeapFrog
We are big fans of LeapFrog here at Casa de Carriere. Earlier last year we bought our youngest daughter Violet from the My Pal Scout line and it quickly became one of her favourite toys – still is in fact. What I love about LeapFrog is that they have offered a unique educational twist to the world of toys.
One of their newer products the “My Own Story Time Pad” does just that, but in a cool ‘tech’ style format. This neat little tablet measures approximately 6″ x 8″ and is very light with its plastic shell casing and soft touch top.
The Story Time Pad comes pre-loaded with a story and a couple of songs, however you will need to log on to personalize it and add in the additional stories, songs and email capability. The Pad fits up to 5 stories, 10 songs and 3 emails at a time, which can then be switched up, changed or replaced with others by connecting to the LeapFrog Learning Path. This is super easy to do and only takes a couple of minutes.
After downloading the LeapFrog Learning Path software, you simply plug the Time Pad into your computer and then go through the prompts which allow you to customize the tablet according to your child’s preferences.
Every time you connect any of your LeapFrog electronics to the online LeapFrog Learning Path, you are not only able to see all of the products that you currently have registered, but the individual ‘progress’ charts for each one of your children. It also provides ideas to expand and customize your child’s learning.
My 2 1/2 year old daughter found the Story Time Pad extremely easy to use and whizzed around without any direction. Along with the entire alphabet, there are 5 buttons at the bottom of the Time Pad: ABC, Envelope, Paw, Book and Music Note. Once you turn the tablet on Scout provides helpful tips to guide your child such as “Let’s listen to music (your child’s name), press the music button” or “Have you checked your email (your child’s name)? Press the email button.”
The feature that provided the most fun was the capability to customize my own “emails” to my daughter. Whether it be from Mom, Dad or a Gradnparent, you can type in short, sweet messages which then arrive in your child’s ‘email box’. There is a button on the bottom of the pad that will allow them to ‘check’ their email whenever they so choose. The look of surprise on her face when the Time Pad read her email from me was simply priceless!
Vouching from our test drive, I would agree with LeapFrog that this is suitable for a 2-3 year olds however I don’t think it is challenging enough for a 3 1/2-4 year old as the concepts are quite simple. If you have a young toddler, this is a fabulous toy, game and learning tool, but for older children, I would probably take a closer look at the LeapPad. I have yet to review the LeapPad but from what I’ve seen it is a bit more challenging.
