Grand Wailea Review: Maui’s Luxury Resort For Families
Luxurious hotels are a preference for many, however it is a little difficult to find high style and luxury for families with small children. The Grand Wailea is a Waldorf Astoria Resort that has literally thought of every, single detail when it comes to luxury travel and family fun.
Located on Wailea Beach, this beautiful resort has managed to weave the natural beauty and essence of Maui within it’s decor. The ambiance that surrounds you is as impressive as the customer service. It was the combination of both that really blew us away.
We stayed in the resort’s Deluxe Ocean Room, where we had approximately 640 square feet of space, two queen beds and a stunning view. Our balcony overlooked the gardens and ocean – we could even see the Haleakala mountain from our location! We found this room to be the perfect size for our family and never felt cramped or crowded.
If your kids love the pool, they will go nuts over the offerings at Grand Wailea. The Wailea Canyon Activity Pool consists of 9 pools at six different levels. My girls adored baby beach, an area where a shallow pool has been set up with sand, providing a safe, wave free area for little ones to play.
Around the corner, Wailea Canyon offers four jungle pools, a whitewater rapids slide, four tile slides, a Tarzan pool with rope swing and – the world’s first water elevator.
If you can possibly believe it, guests can go up the elevator before sliding down on of the water slides. You have to see it to believe it – so much fun! Adults can enjoy the swim-up bar that sits among the waterfall caves and there are also three Jacuzzis in the pool area. In total the 9 free form pools make up a 25,700 total square foot, 770,000 gallon pool!
The Hibiscus Pool is a 4,850 square foot adults-only pool that is reserved for guests 18 years of age and older. The atmosphere here is very calm and relaxed, in fact, I enjoyed a couple of afternoons reading a book while my husband watched the girls.
In terms of dining, Grand Wailea is home to 6 restaurants, one of them being the the award-winning Humuhumunukunukuapua’a restaurant which has been ranked as one of the top dining spots in Maui. Named after Hawaii’s very own state fish, Humu is actually a floating restaurant!
The Polynesian thatched roof style building floats on a saltwater lagoon that is filled with tropical fish. Not only is this a romantic choice for couples, it is a place of wonder for little ones. My girls could not get over the fish swimming underneath us and we had to literally drag them away when it was time to eat!
Humu offers a range of fresh fish and meat entrees, all prepared with Polynesian and Hawaiian influences. You won’t leave this place hungry, I can promise you that!
The Grand Dining Room was our favorite breakfast spot during our stay. You have the option to eat indoors or outside whilst enjoying the panoramic views atop the terrace. There is nothing this breakfast buffet does not have! They serve everything from a traditional American breakfast to a traditional Japanese breakfast and everything in between.
And the coffee! Oh, don’t even get me started on Hawaiian coffee… I’m addicted for life! You have never had a cup of coffee until you have tried the roasted beans from the island. But now I digress..
Looking for some structured activities for the kiddies? Camp Grande is a 20,000 square foot facility, just for kids! Open from 9 am to 4 pm and 5 pm to 9 pm, this camp has many fun activities, programs and workshops for children of all ages and lunch is also included in the camp fee.
Morning, afternoon and evening activities change every day of the week, so there is always something new going on. Swimming is the one activity that occurs every day of the week. While we visited the camp, Orchid Lei Making, Fish crafts and Sand Art were on the agenda as well as a variety of games.
The highlight of my visit was definitely Spa Grande. Spa Grande is like walking into a dream. The luxury and stunning ambiance will leave you breathless – literally. I had no words, it was that amazing! The treatments are equally as impressive.
I can completely understand why Conde Nast named Spa Grande as one of the “Top 10 Spas in the United States,” it is exquisite! The facility boasts 50,000 square feet and consists of a beauty salon, the spa itself and a fitness area.
Spa Grande is not like any other spa, these experts are constantly upgrading their education and visiting all areas of the world to discover the latest and greatest in spa treatments. They have done a remarkable job in combining the most advanced technology with Ancient Eastern, Thalassotherapy, and Hawaiian philosophies.
Before heading up to my massage, I was lead to the Terme, an area consisting of pools, hot and cold, water therapies, massaging showers and tea baths all designed to soak your troubles away and get you nice and relaxed. It is a complimentary service that is meant to be enjoyed before every treatment. Ah-mazing!
The coolest feature of this spa is the spa menus targeting children and teens! Families with kid and teens ages 6 and up can enjoy their very menu of spa treatments. Think Chocolate coconut scrubs, Honey sugar pedicures and tropical facials! Kids are also treated to a complimentary mini iPod during their sessions. How cool is that? The spa also offers a private Family Spa Suite dedicated to families who want to spend one on one time together.
Spa Grande transported me into a state of bliss that I have never before experienced at any spa in my life. If you can, even if you don’t stay at the Grand Wailea, make it a point to visit this facility. You will NOT be disappointed! Besides, when mom is at the spa, dad can take advantage of the Wailea Golf Club, three courses designed by the world’s best golf architects. Every man’s dream!
For weddings, the Grand Wailea has their very own chapel set in the lush gardens of the resort. It’s funny how although the resort has so many things to offer, everything has been designed in such a way that you are never crowded. It is almost as if you are visiting a different place entirely. That is how I felt when visiting the chapel.
I could really go on and on, but the bottom line is, this resort was one that dreams are made of. There is something for every age, taste and preference. Quite honestly this is the ideal family vacation spot and the next time we are in Maui, I won’t be looking to stay anywhere else. My girls cried when we left the resort and warmed up to the area immediately, surprising considering we had a 6 hour time difference to adjust to!
*A very big thank you to our sponsors, the Grand Wailea and Maui Visitors Bureau and who invited our publication to experience the magic of Maui!*
