Kids Ruled At The Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival

Kohl’s Fun and Fit as a Family featuring Kellogg’s Kidz Kitchen returned for its fourth year

It was a sunny, perfect week for the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival.

The festival, presented by Food & Wine, was a star-studded, four-day event showcasing the talents of the world’s biggest players in wine and spirits, chefs and culinary personalities.

This presentation marked the 10th year of the festival. And though there were many events for adults – the best bang for your buck for families with kids was the “Kohl’s Fun and Fit as a Family featuring Kellogg’s Kidz Kitchen.” For just $20 (per person/per day) – it was a valuable ticket.

Best family ticket in town

Kohl’s Fun and Fit as a Family featuring Kellogg’s Kidz Kitchen returned for its fourth year, February 26 & 27, 2011. Taking place at Jungle Island, one of Miami’s premier theme parks, the event brought together favorite celebrity chefs, culinary personalities, health and fitness professionals, for a weekend of interactive learning.

In anticipation of the two-day event, Melissa d’Arabian – host of Food Network’s Ten Dollar Dinners, said, “I’m excited to be a part of Kohl’s Fun and Fit as a Family and to share information with other parents that will help them make thoughtful, healthy and affordable choices for themselves and their families.” She continued, “As a mother of four young girls, I understand the importance of getting children excited about smart food choices now as I know it will establish a foundation for them to make healthy lifestyle decisions that will last a lifetime.”

During his chef demonstration, where he cooked up an Italian-themed delight, Tyler Florence mentioned how vital it is to introduce kids to different types of food by age three. He explained that very often, if someone has not tried certain foods by that time, their body’s reaction is to reject it.

Fun and Fit as a Family included the internationally recognized Jamie Oliver, who helped kick-off the first Fun and Fit as a Family event in 2008. Other chefs and personalities who appeared in the interactive Whole Foods Market Food Labs presented by Breville included: Michelle Bernstein, Adrianne Calvo, Cat Cora, and Marcela Valladolid. Here, children took part in a hands-on culinary experience while cooking up healthy recipes. In the Kellogg’s Kidz Kitchen – Rachael Ray, Guy Fieri, Giada De Laurentiis, Rocco Dispirito, Duff Goldman, and Tyler Florence demo-ed their favorite, healthy recipes for kids and parents.

In addition to all of this stellar excitement, “Destination Food” was home-base where families delved into healthy food and drink samples from sponsors like Barilla, Cranberry Marketing Board, Pollo Tropical, and others. Kids music was blaring, while tots got to sample chicken and rice, tossed pasta, smoothie samples, and got to build their own garden veggie-themed flower arrangement. Kids even donned chef’s aprons and hats thanks to Kellog’s.

One festival-goer commented, “I love how this event incorporates foods that kids would probably never really try into a delicious treat.”
