Travel Perk Alert: Delta Air Lines Eliminates Expirations On Their SkyMiles Program!

Traveling with a family can get expensive, especially when your baby reaches the age of 2 and has to pay for their own seat! Thankfully, reward and frequent flier programs help to keep the cost down, by allowing you to cash in your points for free flights. We’ve taken advantage of this perk several times and traveled on 3-4 trips with free flights thanks to our accumulated miles and points with various carriers (they all add up!).

Delta Air Lines made an exciting announcement today that will have many travelers making an airline switch. As of January 1, 2011, SkyMiles will no longer have an expiration! This program change makes Delta the only major U.S. carrier without mileage expiration. before the switch, miles expired 24 months after the customer’s last mileage activity.

Delta has made some other changes over the last year, allowing a free first checked bags for Gold, Platinum and Reserve Delta SkyMiles American Express credit card holders. Other perks coming in 2011 include improved booking process, better flight information displays, upgraded award travel calender and benefits when flying with partner airlines – including Air France, KLM, Alitalia and Alaska Airlines.

Even before the change SkyMiles was one of the most successful loyalty programs, named “Best Domestic Frequent Flyer program” for 2007 through 2010 by readers of Executive Travel magazine and “Best Frequent Flyer Program” for 2006 through 2010 by Business Traveler magazine.
