Jennifer Meyer: “Jewelry Has To Have Significance And Has To Last Forever”

Designer Jennifer Meyer is now a well-known name in the designer world. Married to Spiderman star, Tobey Maguire, she is also a busy hands-own mom to her 4-year-old daughter, Ruby, and 1 1/2 year-old son, Otis.

In June 2005, Jennifer decided to start up her own company. Her goal was to create substantial yet elegant pieces for everyday wear and the results have been outstanding. Beautiful nature inspired necklaces, rings and bracelets are made by incorporating yellow, white and rose 18-karat gold, some with delicate precious and semi-precious stone accents.

We caught up with this busy mompreneur for a quick interview last week, where she dishes on her inspirations, her daughter’s fashion sense, and how her grandmother made an impact on her career.

CM: Your jewelry collection has made quite an impact in the fashion world, especially among many a-listers in Hollywood. The pieces are very different from what is out there! What would you say sets the apart from the other pieces on the market?

JM: “Jewelry is an emotional purchase. It has to have significance and has to last forever. In every collection, I include a very personal piece, such as the nameplate necklace, or the diamond letter pendant necklace. People respond to those pieces because they remind them of someone the love.”

CM: Can you tell me a little bit about your signature leaf design? What does it represent?

JM: “The leaf was the first piece of jewelry I designed and I spent a long time making it just right. At the time, it was a meaningful design because it represented “turning over a new leaf”.”

CM: How did you get started with your business and what inspired you to start designing  jewelry?

JM: “My Grandmother had a huge impact on my early interest in jewelry design. She loved making jewelry, so we would sit at the kitchen table together, designing.”

CM: As a busy mom of two, how do you come up with such creative ideas?

JM: “Although my family and work keep me busy, I always pay attention to my surroundings. You can find inspiration in the most interesting, unexpected places.”

CM: Do you find it difficult to balance family life with your professional business? How do you balance it all?

JM: “I think as most working mothers will tell you, you do the best you can each and every day. Ultimately, my family comes first, which means I have to rely on my incredible production team to help me get everything done.”

CM: We’ve spotted Ruby in a few pieces from Stella McCartney’s GAP collection. Is she a budding fashionista? Does she enjoy dressing up?

JM: “Ruby loves getting dressed up, and has recently become interested in making jewelry. I’ve taken Ruby to the bead store and she’s made some really amazing jewelry!”

CM: How is Otis doing? Does he get along well with his big sister?

JM: “They are adorable together! Ruby is very protective of Otis. And in the morning the first thing Otis says is “Rube. Rube.” Because he can’t pronounce Ruby yet.”

CM: You and your husband Tobey Maguire are very much involved in Service Nation. Can you tell me a little bit about this charity and why are you are both so passionate about the cause?

JM: “It’s a great cause and it’s important for everyone to try and be of service in anyway they can to their community.”

If you would like to purchase pieces from Jennifer Meyer’s exquisite jewelry collection, you can do so by visiting Barneys New York, or online, where they sell a nice selection of her signature pieces.

A mom to two girls and a baby boy, a writer and the publisher of Child Mode. As a lover of style and fashion, Nadia found her ‘niche’ and love of children’s clothing while searching for quality items for her family.

Are you kidding me? Just how are nameplates and intial pendants “very different from what is out there!” This kind of jewelry has been “out there” for at least thirty years!
