Josie Maran: “Having A Daughter Of My Own Has Led Me To A Whole New Eco-Awakening”

BY NADIA CARRIERE

Josie Maran is a model, actress, mom and the creator of Josie Maran Cosmetics. Many of you may recognize the Van Helsing star as the as the former face of Maybelline Cosmetics, a title she held for almost a decade or from her modeling days for Sports Illustrated. Josie has graced the covers of fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle, and Glamour.

In an exclusive interview with Child Mode, the 31-year-old eco-conscious model spoke about how she was inspired to create this natural cosmetic line, her passion for healthy living, tips for moms trying to integrate a healthy lifestyle into their families, fashion, style, motherhood and her adorable 3-year-old daughter Rumi Joon.

CM: You are very well known for your career as a model and actress, what inspired you to create a natural line of cosmetics? How did Josie Maran Cosmetics come about?

JM: “With 17 years of modeling experience, I’ve obviously spent a lot of time in the makeup chair! There were days I’d have makeup caked-on and I often got break-outs. I never heard about healthier alternatives that were functional enough to be used by professional makeup artists. If I had, I would have asked that we use them. So, I knew when I created my line, I wanted to have the best of both worlds – a product that performs well and is also healthy for people and the environment.”

CM: Have you always had a passion for natural and healthy living?

JM: ” I was born into a family that cares about environmental and social issues – so you could say my awareness of environmental issues was just a natural part of my upbringing. My father is a green builder, my mother an artist, my grandmother a human rights activist/professor at UC Berkeley. We were always into a socially conscious way of living. But, I do feel that now having a daughter of my own has led me to a whole new “eco-awakening” – inspiring me to be even more conscious of our impact on the environment. “

CM: Tell us about your partnership with Global Green. I’ve been a longtime supporter of Global Green.

JM: “In the past I’ve participated at events for green design solutions and sustainable building, education, and global warming. On April 13th I will be joining Kelly Ripa and Electrolux for the first ever “Green Tip Swap”, benefiting Global Green. I’ll be sharing my green beauty and lifestyle tips with Kelly and other hosts on a live web-chat on Facebook. It’s going to be a lot of fun!

To sign up for your spot starting April 1st, log on to www.kelly-confidential.com!”

CM: What are some ways women can integrate environmental awareness and a healthy lifestyle into their homes and family?

JM: “Start with the small things. Transitioning to a greener lifestyle may take time, but you can start by simply swapping out your go-to cosmetics and personal care products for ones that contain natural ingredients and come in biodegradable packaging.

Other little things can help: don’t buy paper napkins, start using reusable cloth napkins instead. Shut down your computer every time you’re finished using it–it saves a lot of energy!”

CM: How has motherhood changed you?

JM: “I was pregnant around the same time I was developing the line, and it definitely made me more aware of what I was putting inside my body and on my skin. It made me even more adamant about not using any products that contain parabens or petrochemicals or fragrances.

It also made me want to make a difference in the world, and it makes me strive to be a a strong business woman today. I want Josie Maran Cosmetics to be a huge success–not only for myself, but for my daughter. I want to be a strong role model for her!”

CM: Does your daughter Rumi Joon have her own sense of style? What are some of her favorite things?

JM: “Oh yeah, she is very into style! She loves princess clothes (of course), pigtails, and my shoes! She also loves to play in the mud which keeps her balanced.”

CM: How would you describe your own personal style?

JM: ” I am a free spirit! I love to be barefoot, but I love high-heels too!

CM: What are your top “can’t live without” products?

JM: “Number one: Josie Maran Argan Oil! It’s my favorite product. I use it day and night–as a moisturizer, to fix split ends, and repair dry cuticles. I’m also loving my new Argan Primer Mist. It preps my skin for makeup, then sets it during the day. Just one spritz wakes up my skin and leaves me feeling refreshed!

I also can’t live without Duchess Marden Damascena Pure Rose Water, Jo Wood Organics Usiku Organic Body Oil, and Rare Elements Essential Conditioner.”

CM: What are your top three fashion and beauty tips for moms?

JM: “Less is more–a natural look for makeup is always beautiful! Always be comfortable. Accentuate your best features!”

CM: Do you have any other projects or exciting ventures coming up that you would like to share?

JM: “Right now I’m focusing on expanding my line and creating the fall and holiday collections!”
